The primary responsibility of the chemical engineer is to develop and support the oxygen separation technology and pneumatic systems of Inogen products.  The chemical engineer is also responsible for operating and maintaining Inogen's oxygen production laboratory space, including operating laboratory equipment, researching new equipment as needed and overseeing use of the laboratory and equipment by other departments / employees.  The chemical engineer will also be responsible for helping to evaluate innovative technologies and working with development partners to integrate new technologies into Inogen Projects as well as contributing to Inogen's Intellectual Property Portfolio.

Key Competencies:

  • Analytically design and evaluate appropriate oxygen generating systems to meet the needs of Inogen's product development pipeline.
  • Support the design and manufacture of Inogen's PSA systems including test systems.
  • Investigate alternate oxygen generation technologies.
  • Work with component suppliers and other members of the R&D team to create highly reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective oxygen generating systems.
  • Actively pursue the generation and protection of intellectual property to achieve Inogen's corporate goals.
  • Chief operator for all oxygen generation related laboratory equipment. Responsible for adapting equipment for use in new or existing experiments and managing usage schedules of equipment.  This involves working extensively with National Instruments Lab View Controls and a variety of gas measuring equipment for flow, pressure and gas composition.
  • The chemical engineer is also responsible for operating system level test stations including brushless DC motors, pneumatic compressors, solenoid valve pressure/flow tests, and environmental chambers.
  • Primary responsible for system integration and performance including: Pressure Swing Adsorption research and development, testing and troubleshooting; Pneumatic manifold testing, performance, and ongoing process changes; Compressor/motor analysis, testing, and use; Solenoid valve operation using lab view to simulate device performance.
  • Laboratory materials / Equipment supervisor: The research engineer shall ensure that the lab is stocked with appropriate materials and equipment for necessary research, development and safety. This work includes coordinating calibration intervals with QA/RA and other parts of the development team to ensure equipment is always available and in calibrated, working order.
  • The research associate will keep detailed records of test set-ups and test records for the design history files and for reference by other engineers for equipment usage.


Do you possess these abilities?

  • Expertise in Pressure Swing Adsorption process design, modeling, and supporting experimental methodologies necessary.
  • Self-motivating and capable of self-direction required
  • Experience with National Instruments Lab View desirable.
  • Experience with Pressure / Flow Equipment required.
  • Highly motivated and able to act as a key part of the R&D team.
  • Good attention to detail and accurate and complete documentation required
  • Desire and ability to perform hands-on prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting required


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field required.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years' experience in research laboratory environment.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in medical device development preferred

Working Conditions:

Office, lab, and manufacturing floor environment.  Occasional travel to Inogen Manufacturing sites
